One of the most recent innovations for the treatment of stress urinary stress incontinence (SUI) to hit the market in recent years is the TVT-Secur System, manufactured by Gynecare. This product is designed to reduce the involuntary leakage of urine during routine physical activities such as laughing, coughing, or sneezing. Unfortunately, it has recently come to the public’s attention that Gynecare TVT complications may include erosion, infections, pain, dyspareunia, organ perforation, and the recurrence of SUI.

What’s the Problem?
The Gynecare TVT uses a mesh tape that is shaped into a sling to support the urethra and position it so that the involuntary leakage of urine no longer occurs. The device is inserted through a small incision and placed against the vaginal wall to strengthen the weakened area of the pelvic floor that is allowing the urethra to drop from its normal position. The surgery to implant Gynecare TVT mesh is typically performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, and takes less than an hour to complete.
Unfortunately, despite initially being hailed as a breakthrough in medical device technology, a number of risks have recently been associated with the placement of Gynecare TVT Mesh. Over the past several years, the FDA has received thousands of adverse event reports (AERS) linked to the TVT- Secur System and other similar transvaginal mesh products. In severe cases, the complications that develop are life-threatening, and require one or more painful revision surgeries to remove the device. Some of the most common Gynecare TVT complications include:
- erosion through vaginal epithelium
- pain, including dyspareunia
- urinary problems
- recurrence of prolapse and/or incontinence
- bowel, bladder, and blood vessel perforation
- vaginal scarring
- mesh erosion
The FDA recently issued a warning to medical professionals advising them to be alert of these complications in patients who have undergone treatment with a transvaginal mesh device. In many cases, preserving the patient’s quality of life depends on quickly correcting any issues with timely medical treatment. If you believe you are experiencing complications from the placement of a Gynecare TVT product, it is important that you seek immediate medical attention to prevent further damage.
